Essence magazine is an inspirational magazine for African-American women that encourages them to lead bold, fulfilling lives.
First published in 1970 as primarily a fashion magazine, Essence has evolved to cover beauty tips, lifestyle topics, relationship advice, and social issues in the African-American community. Now each issue is considered monthly celebration of the African-American woman's experience, dedicated to encouraging her passions and dreams. Magazine covers feature celebrities, occasionally men, but most often black women.
Aside from the features in every issue, content in the magazine is organized in these sections: "Style," "Beauty&Hair," "News&Culture," "Sex&Love," "Work&Wealth," and "Body&Spirit." Regular features within these sections include: "Style Hunters," searching out the must-follow trends; "Street Style," reader-submitted photos of women rocking the latest looks; "Books," a monthly book recommendation; "10 Things We're Talking About," a run-down of 10 hot topics; "Single Man of the Month," a profile of one featured single man; and "Career News," how to navigate common pitfalls at the office.
Throughout the year, Essence may produce several special issues, such as the "Body Issue," the "Men's Issue," the "Readers' Issue," and others dedicated to seasonal fashion previews, the annual Black Beauty Awards, and annual Women of the Year. 10 physical issues mailed, one issue counts as a double issue, making 11 issue subscription.
Women looking for inspirational advice, along with beauty and fashion tips, will find a well-rounded read in a subscription to Essence magazine!!

Essence is an institution, time-honored and beloved in the community. The magazine seems less impactful that decades prior but it is nonetheless purposeful and entertaining.
I love Essence! It is a great source of information for African Americans. It keeps up with the latest fashion, celebrity news and entertainment. The magazine dives deep into politics and tells stories about people that have done some amazing things that may not be well known to the public. Great reading!
I started reading Essence when it first came out. I love that I can see Black women, like myself, being beautiful, intelligent, wise, conscious, spiritual, whatever! I get to feel relaxed and strong reading it. I also get to read about other women like myself.
I love you the magazine and proud supporter of Essence. However I thought I signed up for a year long subscription. It was just 1 month. Magazine articles as warm and informative as I remember. Love the color diversity and easy of use on the kindle. Passing down a gift subscription to my younger family members. then they can see image of beauty that look like them.
Still a good magazine for us ladies--black, white, or whatever. I'm still hoping to see more diversity in their articles, and having more interviews and conversations with women of all backgrounds. I always remember what one of my friends at work told a co-worker who was in the hospital---There are times when us girls have to stick together. But I've always enjoyed reading Essence--I hope it stays that way.
